What is Mutual Recognition

The driver must apply and receive approval for Mutual Recognition before transferring their interstate driver/motorcycle licence to Tasmania.

Mutual Recognition allows drivers who hold an ancillary certificate to drive a taxi, public passenger vehicle or conduct driving instruction to have their interstate authority recognised in Tasmania without the need for a full application. This does not include ancillary certificates in Ride Source.

If a driver is visiting from interstate and holds a current ancillary certificate, they can work in Tasmania without transferring their driver licence or obtaining a Tasmanian ancillary certificate for up to 6 months.

For ancillary certificates issued by:

  • Queensland and South Australia - they are not eligible for Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) and can operate in Tasmania on their Queensland or South Australian ancillary certificate providing both their driver licence and ancillary certificate is current for a period of up to 6 months
  • All other states - must notify for (Automatic Mutual Recognition (AMR) to operate in Tasmania for a period of up to 6 months

When a driver has been in Tasmania longer than 6 months or becomes a permanent resident, they must apply for mutual recognition.
