Macquarie and Davey Streets Bus Improvements
We are improving Macquarie Street and Davey Street for buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and general traffic. These streets provide important connections for people travelling to and through Hobart.
This project is improving Macquarie Street and Davey Street for buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and general traffic.
It includes an extra traffic lane and an extended peak period clearway on Macquarie Street to improve traffic flow and provide a dedicated left hand turning lane into Molle Street. This clearway operates:
It also includes improving bus stops, removing parking to improve bus access, cycling improvements and traffic flow, and installing new walking connections.
We recently completed the first stage of work for Macquarie Street, including:
As part of the second stage of work for Macquarie Street we are:
We will share more information about these future improvements as it becomes available.
We recently completed the first stage of work for Davey Street, including:
In the second stage of work for Davey Street we are:
We recently changed the parking signs on Gore Street, Ispahan Avenue, Warneford Street, Denison Lane, and Macquarie Street between Molle Street and Barrack Street (even-numbered side).
Parking spaces on the even-numbered side of Macquarie Street, from the Southern Outlet to Molle Street, were removed in April 2024.
Parking spaces on the even-numbered side of Davey Street from Sandy Bay Road to Linden Avenue were removed in late to July to allow for the bicycle lane to be installed.
The Department of State Growth manages Macquarie Street and Davey Street and can make changes to on-street parking on these streets. Parking in the side streets is managed by the City of Hobart.
We worked closely with the City of Hobart to coordinate changes to parking on state roads and local streets to time all available parking spaces to make parking fair for everyone, including permit holders. Parking in council-managed streets allow:
Timed parking is available on the odd- numbered side of Macquarie Street between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, where signed.
There is no parking available on the even-numbered side of Macquarie Street between the Southern Outlet and Molle Street at any time, without an approved State Roads Traffic Management Permit (see below).
Davey Street residents can continue to park in Heathfield Avenue and Hampden Road in the existing permit parking areas.
A Traffic Management permit is issued when access or changes are required on a state road which may affect its normal traffic conditions.
Anyone can apply for a permit for temporary access or change to a state road. Please apply for your permit at least 20 business days before you need to affect the road conditions. No ‘work’ can be done until a written permit has been issued.
To apply for a permit, complete the four tabs in the online form, attaching the following:
There is no State Roads fee for applying for a traffic management permit.
To keep traffic moving during peak times, there are time restrictions for ‘works’ on major state commuting roads and routes.
Obtaining a permit provides approval for installing temporary traffic control devices and advisory signage only.
Information about traffic permits on state roads can be directed to 03 6166 3369, or please email permits@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
The following areas can be used at the designated times to drop off and pick up school students:
In selected locations, five-minute parking will be available on school days: 8:00 am to 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, where signed.
No Parking zones are available where signed, providing vehicles with two minutes to stop and drop off or pick up students.
The Australian Road Rules provide stopping and parking exemptions for authorised drivers of emergency vehicles. These drivers can stop and park to attend emergencies as necessary.

Yes. As improvements take place, there will be some changes to bus stops.
Bus stops 2 and 3 on Davey Street (between Murray Street and Salamanca Place) were recently upgraded to install new bus shelters.
Bus stop 6 on Macquarie Street was removed to prepare for a new morning and afternoon clearway on Macquarie Street to provide a longer, dedicated left turning lane into Molle Street. We consulted with bus service providers in 2021 and 2023 about the removal of bus stop 6. Please contact your service provider with any questions about routes or timetables.
Bus stop 5 on Davey Street was removed to install the Davey Street bicycle lane from Sandy Bay Road to Linden Avenue.
At a future date, bus stop 6 on Davey Street will be upgraded.
We asked the community for their feedback on the proposed concept design of Macquarie Street and Davey Street in September 2021. This consultation included the new T3 Southern Outlet Transit Lane starting near the Olinda Grove exit on the Southern Outlet and continuing into Hobart’s CBD.
You can read more about this consultation and its findings here.
We consulted with Macquarie Street and Davey Street parking permit holders, businesses, and residents between July 2022 and January 2024 on the changes to parking spaces on these streets.
You can read more about this consultation and feedback here.
We are timing these works to minimise traffic impacts and make sure we aren’t working on too many sections at the same time.
