Real-time tracking is being rolled out to Tasmanian public transport. Real-time uses GPS technology to see the location of a bus or ferry and works out how long it will take to get to each upcoming stop.

Real-time information is available for buses and ferries in and around Hobart, and Metro Tasmania’s Launceston and Burnie services. This will expand to cover all public buses and ferries state-wide. Scroll down to see which services have real-time and to learn more about the program.

1. Which buses have real-time tracking?

Real-time tracking is being rolled out to all public buses that operate a regular timetable and pick up public passengers at bus stops. This includes all Metro Tasmania, Tassielink, Kinetic, Manions Coaches and Calow’s Coaches public services.

We’ll update this page as more services come online.

Please note that services not yet operating real-time are not shown on the real-time interactive map timetable.

2. Does it include ferries?

Yes, Hobart’s River Derwent ferries now have real-time tracking.

3. Real-time information is not available or does not display until the bus is approaching my stop

Real-time information is shown once a bus starts its route. If your stop is at or near the start of a route, real-time predictions might not be available.

4. I don’t have a smart phone. Can I get real-time information at bus stops?

At this stage, real-time is available online via internet-connected devices, including mobile devices and desktop computers. Bus stops are not currently equipped with technology to receive real-time information.

5. Does real-time tracking change the way I buy my ticket?

No, there are no changes to how you buy a bus or ferry ticket. Real-time is a service that lets you know how far away your bus or ferry is from your stop.

6. How do I access real-time tracking?

You can see real-time information by using Google Maps, the Metro Tas app, or by clicking the link below to access the Tasmania Real-Time interactive map.

7. Can I save the real-time shortcut to my home page?

Yes, you can. To save to an iPhone, click the share icon and select ‘Add to home screen’.

For Android devices, click the three dots in the top right of your screen and select ‘Add to home screen’.

You can also save the link to your regular bus stop to make it quicker to locate your bus.

8. I already use live tracking provided by my bus operator. Can I still use it once the new system starts?

We are bringing information from all Tasmanian operators together into one place so you can see all your bus and ferry options. Some operators may choose to keep their own real-time services in addition to the state-wide service, so check with your operator.

9. Can I use real-time to plan my journey?

You can plan your journey through Google Maps or the Metro Tasmania app and see real-time information.
