1. General Vehicle Registration Transfer – Online

You may be able to transfer a registration using the Online Transfer portal.

You will need:

  • the vehicle’s registration number
  • the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or Chassis number
  • Seller/previous operator/s details
    • Surname and Tasmanian Driver licence number, or
    • Organisation/Company name and Customer Identification number (CIN), or
    • Licensed Motor Vehicle Dealer Number (LMVD) and Customer Identification number (CIN).
  • date of purchase or acquisition
  • purchase price or market price (whichever is higher)
  • Buyer/new operator Details
    • Surname and Tasmanian driver licence Number or,
    • Organisation/Company name and Customer Identification number (CIN), or
    • Licensed Motor Vehicle Dealer Number (LMVD) and Customer Identification number (CIN).
  • a Visa or MasterCard for payment of Transfer fee and Duty.

You will receive a registration certificate which includes receipt details by mail.

If the transfer is not successful using the portal, please visit Service Tasmania with the required documents required for ‘General Vehicle Registration Transfer - in person’.

2. General Vehicle Registration Transfer – In person

To complete a transfer of vehicle registration in person at Service Tasmania, the transferee/new operator/buyer, is to provide:

Includes joint to single operators and single to joint operators.

  1. Tasmanian Driver licence or Evidence of identity
  2. Proof of exemption from duty (if applicable).
  3. Application to transfer vehicle registration with submission of the approved form MR1 (reverse side of registration certificate) or MR116 which includes:
  1. Signatures of the previous registered operator/s or seller/s, if no disposal notice is recorded.
  2. Signature of the new operator/s.

If item 3 cannot be provided item 4 is required.

  1. proof of entitlement
  2. Payment of Transfer fee and Duty (if applicable)

You will be provided a receipt and receive a registration certificate by mail.

3. Transferring to or from joint operators

To add a joint name to your registration or remove a name from your current joint registration. Please see General Transfer of vehicle registration. Transfer fee and half-duty fee is applicable. This includes:

  • Two registered operators to one
  • where the new registered operator was one of the previously registered operators
  • where the previous operator remains one of the joint registered operators.
  • One registered operator to two registered operators (light vehicles only)

4. Vehicles transferred as a part of a Deceased Estate

  • Duty exemption

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as a part of a deceased estate including vehicles jointly registered, and the new or surviving registered operator is the beneficiary you may be exempt from duty payment.  Please refer to Guidelines provided by the State Revenue Office.

  • Duty exemption not applicable

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as a part of a deceased estate and duty exemption has not been approved or is not applicable, you will need to provide documentation as provided for a general transfer of vehicle registration.

In the event that a beneficiary does not want to assume responsibility of a vehicle, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles may suspend or cancel the registration of the vehicle in line with R104(1) c of the Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2021

5. Vehicles transferred as a part of a Relationship breakdown (family Law Settlement)

  • Duty exemption

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as consequence of the breakdown of a domestic or caring relationship, you may be exempt from the Duty payment. Please refer Relationship Breakdown Exemptions provided by the State Revenue office

  • Duty exemption not applicable

Where a vehicle registration is to be transferred as consequence of the breakdown of a domestic or caring relationship and a duty exemption has not been approved or is not applicable you will need to provide documentation as provided for a general transfer of vehicle registration.
