Some vehicles, and vehicles used in certain situations, may be exempt from registration. Please refer to the exemptions from registration page for more information.
To cancel your registration you will need to surrender your number plates at Service Tasmania.
If you are the registered operator of the vehicle you will need to provide:

If another party is returning the plates, the refund can only be given to the registered operator of the vehicle.
If you are not the registered operator you will need to transfer the vehicle first to receive the refund please refer to buying, selling or transferring.
If your vehicle has been stolen and you need to cancel your registration you will need to submit either of the following at Service Tasmania:

You will receive a plate receipt from Service Tasmania.
If you are receiving a refund your plate receipt will show this amount.
The refund amount is calculated pro-rata from the date of the plate surrender to the registration expiry date.
Only the Motor Tax and MAIB premium are refunded.
Registration fees and levies are not refundable.
A cheque will be mailed to your postal address.
Please allow up to 21 business days to receive the cheque in the mail.
