Does my vehicle need registration?
Your vehicle will need registration if parked or used on public streets.
What if the vehicle is currently registered in another state or territory?
You can use vehicles registered in another state in Tasmania for three months.
After three months, the vehicle will need Tasmanian Registration.
A vehicle can remain on interstate registration if:
- the vehicle is being used for non-commercial purposes and,
- is used by a person who has a residential address or resides interstate.
Penalties apply when someone uses a vehicle in Tasmania past the three-month timeframe. and cannot prove interstate residency.

Regulation 128 of Vehicle and Traffic (Driver Licensing and Vehicle Registration) Regulations 2021
Vehicles do not need registration. Or are exempt from registration in the following circumstances:
- Vehicle used within conditions of a Trade Plate and trade plates displayed
- Vehicle used within the conditions of a short-term unregistered permit
- Vehicle driven directly-across a public road to access property.
- A vehicle driven by a Police Officer or an authorised officer in their official duties.
- The vehicle is being towed with a registered tow truck
- An agricultural implement is being towed by another vehicle
- trailers towed by an agricultural machine operating as an agricultural machine.
- Vehicle driven or towed to the following places to be registered:
- an Approved Inspection Station for a pre-registration inspection
- a weighbridge
- a Transport Safety Investigation Officer identity inspection location
- any other place involved in the registration process such as Service Tasmania.
- an Approved Inspection Station for a pre-registration inspection
- driven or towed from any of the places listed above to:
- another place listed in the registration process
- a place to garage the vehicle
- somewhere the vehicle can be repaired if the inspection is failed.
The following are not considered a ‘vehicle’ and do not need registration.
A vehicle does not include:
- motor vehicles that travel only on a railway, tramway or other fixed track
- self-propelled wheelchairs that are not capable of traveling more than 10km/h
- self-propelled lawn mowers. Constructed and used only for lawn mowing that are not capable of traveling more than 10km/h
- self-propelled vehicles designed for off-road work in construction, maintenance or warehouse operation
- that are not capable of traveling more than 10km/h
- that are only used on public streets for:
- loading or unloading another vehicle
- loading or unloading the vehicle onto another vehicle
- manoeuvring at a work site;
- pedal cycles
- with an auxiliary motor (or motors) with a power output (or combined power output) of not more than 200 watts;

- within the meaning of the relevant ADR

If my vehicle is exempt from registration, do I need to buy CTP (MAIB)?
An exemption from registration does not imply exemption from Compulsory third-party insurance (CTP). Please see ‘MAIB (CTP) only’ information.
Please note that CTP is personal injury insurance. This insurance is not vehicle/property insurance for vehicle damage etc.
