Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit

• To move an unregistered vehicle for the purposes of:
  • Relocation - Moving an unregistered vehicle from one location to another
  • Repairs - Moving an unregistered vehicle to a place of repair
  • Event - Using the vehicle to travel to and within an event

• A UVP will only be issued for the minimum number of days needed to undertake the journey, within a 28-day period.

• A motor vehicle or trailer cannot:
  • carry a load (with the exception of a trailer designed to carry a specific load e.g. boat trailer can carry a boat, horse trailer can carry a horse, car trailer can carry a car for relocation)
• A motor vehicle can:
  • tow a registered trailer which is or isn’t carrying a load, if the permit is issued for the purpose of relocation

• You will need to obtain a UVP to tow an unregistered vehicle unless it is being towed by a registered tow truck.

A UVP will not be issued and is not valid if the vehicle:

• is not roadworthy or is not compliant with relevant vehicle standards
• is a repairable write off, statutory write off or declared as wrecked
• has been modified without modification certification
• is currently registered, including conditional registration such as Special Interest, Vintage or Restricted Use
• registration is suspended
• has a defect notice issued
• is recorded as stolen

Examples of vehicles that are not an eligible for a UVP:

• UTV’s & ATV’s
• Tractors and other items of machinery
• Mobile cranes

You can now buy Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permits through your myServiceTas account.

To set up or access your myServiceTas account, please visit Service Tasmania Website.

In person at Service Tasmania

1. Complete the Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit Application Form (PDF 210.8 KB)
2. Submit the form at Service Tasmania with your driver licence or evidence of identity
3. Pay the fee (miscellaneous fees).

Other

If you are unable to set up your myServiceTas Account or can’t apply in person.

1. Complete the Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit Application form (PDF 210.8 KB)
2. Submit to TES@stategrowth.tas.gov.au with:
   1. completed Credit Card Payment Form (DOCX 35.3 KB) for payment of the fee (miscellaneous fees).
   2. a scanned copy of your driver licence or evidence of identity

If your application is approved, you will be provided with a:

• Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit
• Journey details certificate

• If you have questions relating to a UVP please email tes@stategrowth.tas.gov.au

• If you need to change the details of your UVP or cancel it, please visit Service Tasmania with the UVP. This can be done any time on or before the UVP start date. After this, no amendments can be made, and cancellation will not be refunded. If the start date falls on a non-business day, the above still applies.

• A UVP issued in Tasmania may be recognised by other jurisdictions. Please contact the relevant jurisdiction to ensure that a Tasmanian issued UVP is valid in the jurisdiction you will be travelling. A UVP must be obtained from the jurisdiction where the travel with the vehicle is to begin.
