About the project

We will be completing maintenance on the Mersey River Bridge (Victoria Bridge), Devonport, to realign the bridge on its supports.

These works will ensure the bridge is well-maintained into the future and help traffic continue safely and reliably through the north of Tasmania.

The work will include:

  • installing new jacking brackets on the underside of the bridge - these are devices that will help move the bridge about 75 mm to the east, and permanently fixing it to the abutment
  • replacing the expansion joint in the roadway of the bridge deck at the eastern support
  • other repairs to the bearings at each bridge pier and both eastern and western supports.

Timing

Road users can expect some short closures to westbound lanes of the bridge for our maintenance works. Eastbound traffic will be unaffected. The closures to westbound traffic will take place overnight between 9:00 pm Monday, 3 June 2024 and 6:00 am Tuesday 4 June.

We expect these closures will only take one night, but we may need more time to complete the work. If so, additional short closures will take place overnight from:

  • 9:00 pm Tuesday, 4 June to 6:00 am Wednesday, 5 June

The bridge will be closed to westbound traffic for up to 15 minutes at a time before being opened to let traffic through. There will only be a few closures overnight with the times dependent on the progress of the work.

A reduced speed limit will also be in place, and road users are asked to allow for 15 minutes extra travel time.

We expect the works to be complete by the end of June 2024, weather permitting.
