About the project

We are designing new rest area sites along the Bass Highway, west of Westbury. The improved rest areas will include public toilets, shelters and lighting.

Potential locations for the eastbound and westbound HVDRAs were considered along the length of the Bass Highway between the Birralee Road intersection and Porters Bridge Road overpass. Suitable sites were limited by topography, the locations of residences, and existing infrastructure and utilities.

We produced an options report that explored opportunities and challenges for each of the four sites and recommended a preferred site for both eastbound and westbound areas, aligning with the transport industry’s preferences.

Our latest review has identified potential public land for the construction of the westbound HVDRA, with significant redesign to accommodate the rest area on the land title. Investigations are continuing to confirm the design and identify construction and operational issues at the site.

Investigations and surveys have confirmed the site for the eastbound Heavy Vehicle rest area, with detailed design underway and discussions with impacted landholders ongoing.

Temporary traffic management, including a reduced speed limit, may be in place from time to time during investigations to ensure the safety of both workers and road users.

Timing

We are currently working on the designs for this project, and we will update the community when we have more information.
