About the project

This project is investigating possible future freight routes from Brighton to Cambridge, as well as considering the current route.

We will also look at the current road conditions and upgrades that could be required on each potential route to make them viable as a future route.

This project is looking into options for routes, and nothing is decided. We want to hear from the community, and no decisions will be made without carrying out consultation. We are offering multiple ways to share your feedback (below under "Community consultation").

Your views will help inform our investigations and supplement our technical studies.

Background

Heavy vehicle demand between Brighton and Cambridge is expected to increase in the future.

There are currently existing heavy vehicle freight routes via the Brooker Highway and/or East Derwent Highway and Tasman Highway, which cater for current freight demands.

However, as these roads become increasingly congested in the future, it may pose a challenge for efficient freight movements.

The potential freight routes

We are investigating three potential freight routes.

The options are:

Option 1 - Tea Tree Road, Back Tea Tree Road, Malcolms Hut Road, Richmond Road/Cambridge bypass.

Option 2 - Tea Tree Road, Middle Tea Tree Road, Colebrook Road and Richmond Road/Cambridge bypass.

Option 3 - Tea Tree Road, Colebrook Road, and Richmond Road/Cambridge bypass.

Option 4 - None of the routes above are preferred.

We want to look at the pros and cons of these routes and use this information to improve Tasmania’s freight network and road conditions for all users.

Community consultation

The community consultation period is now closed.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and feedback with us.

Further consultation

If a preferred route is identified, there will be an opportunity for further targeted engagement during the design development of the preferred route upgrades.
