About project

We will be replacing the timber fenders (also known as bumpers) under the Denison Canal Bridge, Dunalley.

We will also be replacing the walers, which the fenders are attached to.

We inspected the entire fendering structure in May 2023 and found that the timber is reaching the end of its life and need to be replaced.

Due to the durability and availability of timber we have decided to use an alternative material called FRP members (Fibre reinforced polymer) which are more durable and have a life expectancy of up to 25 years.

All work will be undertaken from the water.

Timing

We will start work on Monday, 5 August 2024.

We will be working between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and we will let you know if we need to work outside these times.

This project will take approximately eight weeks, weather permitting.

We expect to complete this project by early to mid - October 2024.

Project location

The Denison Canal Bridge is located on the Denison Canal in Dunalley, in Tasmania's south east.

Traffic changes

Vessels using the canal

Vessels can keep using the canal during the construction period, however only three openings are permitted per day so that staff working from the water are kept safe and can plan their work effectively.

The three daily scheduled opening times are:

  • Morning:                 8:00 am to 8:30 am
  • Middle of day:         12:00 noon to 12:30 pm
  • Afternoon:               4:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

As normal, bookings are still required to transit through the canal.

To book, please call the Canal Superintendent on 6253 5113.

Road users

Please allow up to 30 minutes extra travel time during the scheduled canal openings. This allows the bridge to be raised so boats can travel through.

If there is no vessel transit booking for that timeslot, then traffic will flow as normal.

Please keep to posted speed limits and always follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.
