Everyone's daily commute is different, and we want to provide Hobart with more choices for commuting and using public transport.
Park and ride facilities offer commuters car parking close to existing key bus routes. Our Firthside and Huntingfield park and ride facilities are now available. The Huntingfield facility offers access to new express bus services.
About the project
We are now progressing the designs for new park and ride facility locations in the growing residential areas of Claremont, Midway Point and Rokeby.
The three locations chosen are:
- Claremont Link Road and Maralinga Drive, Berriedale
- Fenton Street, Midway Point
- Rokeby (either Pass Road or Corner of South Arm Highway and Tollard Drive)
In 2022 we consulted with the community on a concept plan for a park and ride facility on Pass Road, Rokeby. Investigations into the site uncovered issues with the terrain and we are now investigating a park and ride facility on the corner of South Arm Highway and Tollard Drive, Rokeby. Public consultation for the Tollard Drive park and ride facility will begin in mid-2025.
We want these facilities to be safe and inviting spaces that connect with cyclist and pedestrian routes.
We have conducted surveys and investigations on these sites to gather more details to inform our designs.

Community consultation
Detailed design
We are developing the designs for the Rokeby park and ride facilities.
Public consultation for the Tollard Drive park and ride facility will begin in mid 2025.
Concept design 2022
Community consultation on the concept design for the Claremont, Midway Point and Rokeby park and ride facilities was completed in 2022.
Members of the community provided their feedback on the concept designs by leaving comments and feedback on an online interactive map, in-person at a display venue in each of the local areas, by phone, and by email. Designs were available to view at 18 locations.
You can read more about the consultation and findings here: Read the Consultation Summary Report (May 2023) (PDF 220.7 KB).
Timing
We are planning to deliver new park and ride facilities for Claremont, Midway Point and Rokeby in 2025.

We expect to start construction in 2025.
Midway Point
We expect to start construction in early May 2025.
Rokeby
We expect to have designs ready in 2025 and will share more information about this facility as it becomes available.
FAQs
What is a park and ride facility?
A park and ride facility is a free parking space for commuters catching public bus services. The facility allows for bicycle storage and car and motorcycle parking, including accessible parking. Park and ride facilities also provide a safe space for vehicles dropping off and picking up passengers.
What are the benefits of park and ride facilities?
Park and ride facilities provide opportunities for public transport users to cycle, walk, or travel by car to a facility with dedicated commuter parking close to key bus routes. Local shared user paths will also connect to the facility.
What features do park and ride facilities have?
The park and ride facilities will have:
- parking for vehicles and motorcycles
- a passenger drop-off and pick-up zone (Claremont and Rokeby only)
- secure bicycle storage
- all-weather bus shelters and timetable information
The safety features include:
- lighting for car parks, bus shelters and along footpaths
- car parks designed to reduce anti-social motor vehicle usage
- bollards and barriers near bus shelters and paths.
We will also be installing the infrastructure ready for future CCTV monitoring. We will provide an update on CCTV monitoring as the information becomes available.
What type of land are the facilities being development on?
The facilities are being developed on government-owned land.
The land for the Claremont and Rokeby facilities is zoned for Utilities.
The land for the Midway Point facility was recently rezoned for Community Purpose.
What assessments are needed to construct park and rides facilities?
Each location requires different assessments. These assessments are submitted to local councils with the relevant development application or permit requirements, and may include:
- lighting
- noise
- stormwater
- traffic impact.
What will happen to the roads and streets near new park and ride facilities?
We will conduct Traffic Impact Assessments to help predict any impacts that the park and ride facilities may have on the surrounding road network. These assessments will also inform future decision-making for any improvements to local roads and streets to be considered during the design stage.
Will the park and ride facilities have fences?
Generally, park and ride facilities will be contained by:
- local roads and streets
- shared paths
- some landscaping
- bus stops.
The sites in Midway Point and Rokeby currently have existing fences between adjacent properties and the vacant land. Fences in these areas will be retained or reinstated where needed.
Will the park and ride facilities have gates?
No. The facilities will be open 24/7 and the car park entrances will not have gates.
What will happen to bus routes and services?
The park and ride facility locations have been selected as they are close to existing bus routes. Where possible, bus routes will be diverted into the park and ride facility.
Where this is not possible, passengers may need to walk a short distance from their vehicle to their bus stop (or vice versa).
The department’s Passenger Transport Branch will work with bus operators to review timetables and make adjustments where required to better cater to passenger demand. To share feedback on passenger transport experiences, you can email ptfeedback@stategrowth.tas.gov.au
