Huon Highway Mountain River Road Intersection Project
We are developing options to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.
This project will address concerns for pedestrian and bus stop safety at the intersection of the Huon Highway and Mountain River Road.
A consultant is currently developing concept designs for different options to improve the safety for all road users.
We are looking at many options and then will work out what will be the most effective solution for this location to improve safety.
We have also reviewed the speed limit at this location.
The new 80 km/h speed limit will start between Pages Road and Allens Road, which is where the current 100 km/h zone starts and will extend 300 metres north of the Mountain River Road intersection.
We are fast-tracking the design and construction of this project to get the intersection upgraded as soon as possible.
We will work with the Huon Valley Council and the community to decide on the right solution for the intersection.
This project is focused on the intersection of the Huon Highway and Mountain River Road, Grove.
In March, we plan to engage with Huon Valley Council to seek their feedback on the initial concept options.
We will use this feedback to help decide the preferred upgrade options.
We then expect to consult with the community in May 2025 on the preferred options.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $3 million to address concerns for pedestrian and bus stop safety at the intersection of the Huon Highway and Mountain River Road. We also have $40 million from the Australian Government for upgrades along the Huon Highway corridor more broadly, some of which could also be used for this intersection.
Late last year we engaged a consultant who has reviewed the intersection and has begun developing concept designs for different options to improve safety for all road users, with nothing off the table.

We will fast track the design, construction, and community consultation of this project to get the intersection upgraded as soon as possible and will keep the community informed throughout our progress.
We are looking at many different options, and nothing is off the table yet.
Our consultants have been drafting up concept sketches for all these options, and we will then go through a process of working out which option is the best solution for this location to improve safety.
We have been doing planning work in the Huon Valley for some time.
We released our Huon Highway corridor strategy in 2023 which identified this intersection as one of concern to the community, and we have also been monitoring the traffic and safety in the area for many years.
We now have funding to progress upgrades and are working on a number of potential options.
In the meantime, we have also installed more warning signs on approach to the intersection, to add to the existing bus stop warning signs.
The Commissioner for Transport has approved a safer speed limit on the Huon Highway between Pages Road and Mountain River Road, Grove, following an assessment and recommendation by the Department of State Growth.
The speed on this 2.3 km section of road will be changed from the current 100 km/h limit to 80 km/h.
The new 80 km/h speed limit will start between Pages Road and Allens Road, which is where the current 100 km/h zone starts and will extend 300 metres north of the Mountain River Road intersection.
The Tasmanian Government has recently committed $3 million to upgrade the Huon Highway/Mountain River Road intersection. The Australian Government has committed $40 million for upgrades along the Huon Highway more broadly, and some of this funding could also be used for this intersection.
